Exquisite early Victorian huge carved shell cameo with ornate rolled gold ornate 'statement' setting. I believe the cameo to be sardonyx shell. It is a beautifully carving of a woman with laurel in her hair (Greek or Roman goddess?). The cameo is framed in a bezel with is deep with role detailing and then further framed in a richly chased interwoven gold rolled gold border. The chased design is more visible in person and quite lovely.
The construction of the setting is quite unusual which its nails at each end. C clasp and a small ring at the top through which a ring can be attached so that it can be worn as a cameo. The cameo actually swivels a bit in the outer setting. I am advised that the piece is early Victorian and quite possibly older, such as from the Georgian period.
Size: 2-5/8" by 2-1/2" and 5/8" deep. Weight is a substantial 32.2 grams.
Condition: There is a vertical line at the left side of the cameo (on the plain shell portion) which appears to be an early repair or a shell portion attached (the cameo is very secure).
