Here is a handsome rare Antique Edwardian Dueber Hampden Pocket Watch16 size Model 104 in a bar over crown railroad case. The watch was made in Canton, Ohio circa 1911 and it is their best quality stem wind lever set movement. Dueber Hampden was the first company to offer a 23 Jewel movement and others soon followed suit with what would become the gold standard for railroad watches. The front of the movement has a double sunk porcelain dial with red outside minute track and blue steel hands all in excellent antique condition. The serial number 280122 and Patent number 711476 indicate that the movement was manufactured between 1911 and 1912. The screw back engraved bezel case was designed so the crown would not dislodge in the pocket and cause the watch to show the time incorrectly. To set the time the front bezel is unscrewed and there is a small lever near 2:00 that slides out and up. Once the hands are set the lever is pushed back and the bezel is screwed on. The bar over crown case was very popular with railroad engineers and conductors with this particular case marked 14 Karat white Gold Filled. When this watch was made movements and cases were sold separately because the user was most interested in the movement and the case was secondary. This case is patent dated 5-22-26 which might indicate that the works were re-cased 15 years after the movement was manufactured. This timepiece is very clean inside and has a smooth winding crown and keeps excellent time over 24 hours and more when wound daily. It is in very good vintage condition with only some light surface scratches on the back case and no scratches or cracks on the clear watch crystal. I am not a vintage pocket watch expert so this watch is being sold “as is” and is currently running smoothly and keeping very good time over multiple days.
The works read as follows- 23 Jewels, 280122 Double Roller, adjusted to 5 positions, No. 104, Canton O, Safety Barrel, Patent # 711476. The inside back case cover has multiple marks including Wadsworth Quality, 14 Karat Gold Filled, 0351747, Pat 5-22-26.
