Rebekah Lodge Past Noble Grand (P.N.G.)
Rebekah Lodge Past Noble Grand (P.N.G.); 10k gold, highly engraved and with muti-color enamel infilling.
In the center of the multi-colored enameled 5-point Star is a scene of Rebekah at the Well (Old Testament: Genesis Chapter 24) which is a symbol of welcoming and hospitality. Starting at the upper right Star point are the Rebekah Lodge symbols of the Dove and the Lily – peace and purity. Proceeding clockwise, the next point of the Star has the moon and 7 stars symbol signifying God's orderly universe and nature. The next Star point at the six o'clock position is the heart and hand symbol of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) that indicates open willing charity. The fourth Star point at the eight o'clock position is the Odd Fellows three chain link symbol of friendship, love and truth. The fifth and final Star point at the eleven o'clock position is the Rebekah symbol, the bee hive, standing for cooperative industry. This enamel five point Star of another five pointed Star with finely engraved points which alternate with the enameled Star points, both of which sit on an extremely intricately engraved Laurel Wreath. The top bar from which the Stars and Laurel Wreath hang has the initials P.N.G. which stand for Past Noble Grand, a former head (Past President) of the Rebekah Lodge. The back of the bar has the pin with safety and is initialed in script ABS, which we believe to be the initials of the one-time Past President.
AGE: 19th Century; 4th quarter
Rebekah started in 1851 as a branch of the Odd Fellows; because of the Odd Fellows symbols and the engraving style, we believe this indicates a 19th Century origin for the pin as Rebekahs became more removed and finally autonomous from the IOOF in the 20th Century.
This is the only Rebekah pin we have ever seen of this particular style. Past Noble Grand pins are scarce but this particular design seems, at this point to be unique, and if not unique, exceedingly uncommon.
Condition: Excellent for age; very top sprig of engraved foliage on the top center of the bar is bent slightly backward. It is virtually unnoticeable from the front, but can be seen from the back.
Dimensions: 1 ¾" High; 1 ¼" Maximum Width
The Stars and Laurel Wreath portion is slightly smaller than a fifty cent piece. Note: The pin is unmarked, but our jeweler determined the pin was 10 Karat Gold by visual examination rather than assay.
