John Wedge Wood (not the more famous Josiah Wedgwood) produced the the Chapoo flow blue pattern circa 1841-1860. Chapoo now written as Zhapu, is a city in China famous as the site of the Battle of Chapoo during the First Opium War in 1842. This 8 1/4" plate is a fine example of early flow blue with typical blemishes for items from this period. The flow is rich, dark, and even. There are stilt marks on the top and bottom and there is fine overall crazing. There is very minor discoloration on the back. There are no cracks, chips, hairlines, or repairs. It is marked on the back as shown and has an old inventory label from a previous owner. This ironstone plate is dense and heavy. We are offering free shipping on this item for our U.S. clients.
