This rare exquisitely detailed lion brooch with pendant bale was crafted by one of the finest American jewelry houses in the 20th century, McTeigue & Co. Established in 1895, McTeigue sold their own designs, as well as supplied such venerable houses as Tiffany & Co., J.E. Caldwell, C.D. Peacock, and Black Starr & Frost. They were bought by the equally venerable Krementz & Co. in 1975 and were integrated into their other firm George Schuler. They marked jewelry at this time S-McT for Schuler-McTeigue, which may be seen on this brooch. In 1990, they were sold to Tiffany & Co.
This lion bears all of the proof of the fine associations and discerning craftsmen of the time. Every bit of the surface is finely carved and detailed. The full cut round brilliant diamonds are the finest quality. There are approximately 42 diamonds with a conservative estimated weight of .84 cts. There is a perfect ruby eye, as well.
The piece measures 11/16" by 3/4" and weighs 5.6 grams. The pendant bale in back makes it a doubly useful piece. The piece if fully marked and signed.
Whether you are born under the sign of Leo, are a bravehearted individual or have the lion in your family crest, this lion will suit many needs, male and female.
