Absolutely impeccable and stunning metal work by the esteemed English silversmith, Charles Washington Shirley Deakin, is brilliantly captured in this hand-wrought, rectilinear, sterling silver Victorian vinaigrette (i.e., perfume pendant). Rococo-influenced engraved foliate C scroll work juxtaposed with varied engine turned patterning beautifully accentuates the cover, raised handle, base and sides. On the cover is also found the engraved, overlapping initials LL bounded by the symbolic belt and buckle of which such virtues as self-defense, strength and protection were associated. Another possibility is an allusion to the Order of the Garter (an English order of chivalry founded in the 14th Century by King Edward III) for which the belt and buckle symbolized binding loyalty and brotherhood. The silver gilt interior grille is pierced with engraved scroll-work.
