Salt glaze jug circa 1870. Made by James Madison Hays who was a confederate soldier from NC. He was captured and imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland. He made pottery before the war, and was reputed to have worked until about 1910. Jug measures 9-1/2" tall x 5-1/2" wide.
