Austrian Bronze-Doré Guilloche Hand Mirror with Portrait
These antique Austrian mirrors are few and far between, and this one has a very nice beveled mirror with nearly all of its silver intact. The portrait represents Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun's most famous work - Marie Antoinette and a Rose, done in 1783. Madame Vigée Le Brun was Marie Antoinette's favorite portrait artist, and she not only painted her many times, but became friends with the queen and was part of the inner circle. It is a great pity, but at some time in its history, someone cleaned the mirror improperly, and the moisture smudged an area in the lower part of the portrait. Fortunately, the face of the portrait is fine, as well as the hand holding the rose. It is quite beautifully and delicately done.
The blue guilloche is in perfect condition, miraculously, as these seldom survive without a chip or crack. The gilding on the bronze is mostly worn off, except for the sides of the mirror. The bezel over the portrait is also in perfect condition.
All in all, a quite exceptional example of the marchande mercier's art.
