This beautiful coral bracelet dates to the late Georgian, early Victorian period, c 1830. There are 6 carved red coral cameo links separated by large coral barrel bead links. The carvings are crisp and clear and have survived in amazing condition considering that they are almost 2 centuries old! The six cameos are carved from Italian red coral and depict 3 women and 3 men. There are slight differences and nuances between the carvings, such as only one of the men having a wrinkled forehead and the women have different hairstyles and crowns. The carvings are either religious figures or Roman gods and goddesses. This bracelet may have been acquired on a Grand Tour of Europe. The bracelet is in very good antique condition and a fine example of the period.
The coral cameos measure 20mm to 22mm tall and 11mm wide. The coral barrel beads average 7mm to 9mm. The bracelet is 7.5" long and almost 1" wide. The clasp matches the size and shape of the coral cameos. The bracelet weighs 19.8 grams.
The bracelet has a box style clasp. The clasp tests as 15K gold. There has been a repair to back side of the clasp. Guessing that the bottom plate was worn due to the numerous times the clasp had been opened and closed during the first 100 years of its life! The clasp works well and shuts securely with a click. We had a jeweler check all of the soldered link joints to ensure that the bracelet is ready for another 100 years. The bracelet does have a guard chain that was removed for photography and it will be reattached.
