Presented here is a magnificent double sided devotional hand painted miniature of the Cuzco School in medal form, with a Mother of pearl 5 decade rosary used as a chain to wear.

The miniature dates from early to mid XIX th century. It is hand painted in oil on copper and highlighted with gold paint. It is framed in a low grade Silver and copper hand made frame (tested but not hallmarked) with a glass to protect it.

The Cuzco School was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru (the former capital of the Inca Empire) during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was not limited to Cuzco only, but later spread to other cities in the Andes, as well as to present day Ecuador and Bolivia.

Size of the medal is 5.5 x 4.5 cm (2.2 x 1.8 in).

Total length of the 5 decade mother of pearl rosary is: 60 cm.

The rosary is made of a Sterling chain , 6.5 mm Ave beads and Sterling capped Pater beads of 8mm diameter.

It is most probable that the medal and the rosary do not have the same origin and that the mounting of the medal to the rosary was made at periods different of their manufacture. The style of the rosary is quite typical of a late 19th very early 20th Century French rosary whereas the medal is definitely Peruvian.

On one side of the medal is depicted the Virgin Lady of Cuzco in its very recognizable style and on the other side is depicted the Archangel Gabriel. Both figures are classics of the Cuzco School of painting and seen in may such paintings.

This extremely rare item, direct from my personal collection, is a fine work of miniature art in all its details. It is in pristine condition with practically 200 years of age.
It will be a fantastic item to add to any devotional jewelry collection, to wear and to offer for special occasions. Its beauty is enhanced by the fact that it is double sided.
