Presented here is an early 20th century VERY RARE medal of the Christ of Burgos, in Spain. It is hand painted on porcelain, then Kiln fired, Enameled and inserted in a sterling frame.

---------------------------------------
In the Cathedral of St. Mary of Burgos which construction begun in 1221, and continued late into the 18th century, one sculpture stands out above all others: the famous (in fact, legendary) Christ of Burgos.

Its impressive, lifelike realism is literally the stuff of legend. At some point, it was claimed its hair and fingernails needed frequent trimming and paring, and that the facial hair of the wooden statue also required a shave every eight days or so. In fact, the wooden body of the Christ is covered in skin-like leather to accentuate its realism.

But the image of the Christ of Burgos shows some eggs at the very base of the Cross.

St. Augustine wrote, in his Sermon CV, 8:“There remains hope, which in my opinion can be compared to the egg. For hope has not yet reached its goal; likewise the egg is something, but it is not yet the chicken.”
It makes sense that this Crucified Christ, which belonged to an Augustinian convent, included these eggs at the base of the cross, following this reflection from St. Augustine himself. These eggs express the highest of all hopes: that of the Resurrection of Christ after the sheer abandonment of Holy Friday, and that of the believer’s rebirth into a blessed life beyond death.

-----------------------------------------

The medal was very probably made in Portugal or Hungary as both countries were specialized in such items.

It is two sided : on the obverse the Christ of Burgos with the Cathedral in the rear , and on the reverse : Milagrosa imagen de Stmo Cristo de Burgos, which in Spanish means : Miraculous Image of the most Holy Christ of Burgos.

This is an extremely rare medal and a very sought item by collectors.

The hand work is very fine and the colors bright.

The medal is in pristine condition and it is sold TOGETHER WITH the chain in the picture.

The frame is in Silver which is not hallmarked but tested. The chain is hallmarked Sterling Silver and has been added recently even though vintage
The chain is 45 cm long .

Dimensions of the medal are : 30 x 22 mm . ( excluding bail)
Weight of the medal alone is 4.4 grams
Weight of the chain alone is 2 grams
