*Plique-a-Jour is a style of enameling in which usually transparent enamels are fused into the openings of a metal filigree to produce an effect suggestive of stained glass. The words are French for "letting in daylight". The technique is not often used because it is very challenging technically: high time consumption with a high failure rate. The technique was originally developed in the Byzantine Empire in 6th century AD. Plique-a-Jour pieces of jewelry were made by master enamelers.
