This cameo depicts Goddess Dawn (Aurora) and Night (Nyx), a very popular subject of Victorian cameos. This cameo is the beautiful Horn Helmet Shell that has an egg white ground contrasting with the orange hue on the top surface. Any nicely carved horn helmet shell cameo is highly desirable. This scene shows Eos (Aurora) and Nyx both in profile with their own attributes. Eos, the goddess of Dawn, wears roses in her hair, looking upward to sky. She is accompanied by her dove who is holding a cornucopia of flowers that symbolizes abundance and nourishment. Nyx, the goddess of night, is beside Aurora peacefully with closed eyes. She is wearing her veil of night poppies. A star and moon are carved on the top, indicating the deep, dark, quiet night. Wonderfully carved with great attention to detail. These depictions are highly collectible and would make a welcomed addition to your collection. Housed in a good filled frame. The front is holding up nicely but the back has wear to gold as seen in the photograph. Does not deter from this work of art. Overall size is 2 3/8 by 2 inches. Shell measures 2 1/8 by 1 6/8 inches. Can be worn as a pendant or brooch. Please ask all questions prior to placing an order! Thanks~
