~ Circa 1850 – 1873 Silver Plated Candlestick By Hawksworth, Eyre & Co ~
This is a circa 1850 – 1873 silver plate candlestick with beaded detailing.
The base is marked with “HE & Co EP” for Hawksworth Eyre & Co. who were founded in 1830 but had gone into liquidation by 1930. The firm became a limited liability company in 1873 and this piece predates that.
The “EP” stands for electroplate which was the process used to plate the base metal in silver.
~ Dimensions ~
The candlestick is 11 inches (28 cm) tall and the base has a diameter of 4.8 inches (12.1 cm). It weighs 1.07 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The original base felt is absent revealing the weighting.
The silver is tarnished in recesses, particularly at the top where the candle would be inserted.
There is still some wax collected in the top.
The silver plate has worn away in places but the candlestick holder generally has a good shine.
