~ A Large And Impressive 19th Century Bronze Mantle Clock By J B Marchand Paris ~
Made by J B Marchand, the clock depicts 2 Knights Templar playing chess.
This is indeed an impressive and interesting item, it depicts 2 knights from the crusades enjoying a game of chess, they are wearing full armour and have their weapons to hand. The shield bears a large central cross with 4 crosses in the quadrants, this is the basic crusades heraldry and the knights are displaying a cross on their armour. There is great attention to detail here, the pedestal depicts shields, weapons and breast plates along with foliage decoration.
This piece was made by the renowned Bronze sculptor JB Marchand of Paris, in around 1850 and would have been a special order for a wealthy family.
It is a beautiful clock the like of which we have not previously seen.
