~ Large Sized WW2 British Navy Ross 10x70 Binoculars On Tripod Stand With Carry Case c1938 ~

Variously know as ‘Captain's Sight’ or ‘Captains Glass’, these Second World War binoculars were designed as the largest hand-held binoculars the British Navy had.

Though technically ‘hand held’, these were too heavy for practical hand use so were almost always mounted upon a tripod stand.

They were only given to larger naval ships such as Cruisers and Battleships, and are quite rare as only around 500 were ever made.

This pair are marked for ‘Ross of London’ and dated for 1938. The marks have been quite worn over time and the serial number is barely legible though does look to be the same as on the case (12114A).

Both barrels are clearly marked with yellow broad arrows.

The binoculars are fitted with extendable brass sun shields and have a fully working set of filters.

The brass and metal fittings have been professionally polished and they come with a wood and metal adjustable tripod, which has also been polished.

The set is complete with a wooden storage case for the binoculars. The case is marked ‘Binocular Patt 12114A Ross London’ and has the broad arrow mark.

~ Dimensions ~

The binoculars have a barrel length of 34.5cm (13 ½ inches) and a width of 23cm (9 inches).

They weigh 4Kg.

The tripod stand is adjustable in height with a minimum height of around 114cm (45 inches).

It weighs approximately 6Kg.

The binoculars on stand have a total height of approximately 125cm (49 inches) and weigh 10Kg.

The case measures 58.5cm (23 inches) by 28cm )11 inches) by 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches) and weighs 6Kg.

Total weight of set is 16Kg (approx).

~ Condition ~

The optics are in great condition showing a lovely clear image with all filters in working order.

The binoculars and stand are both in a very nice order with only a few small marks (to be expected) but no damages.
