~ Woolston Across The River Itchen By Martin Snape (1852-1930) ~
A beautiful and sizable watercolour scene by Martin Snape depicting a calm view over the River Itchen looking towards Woolston, Southampton. The painting is in milky hues of greys, blues and whites, the calm mood to the piece is reminiscent of a cool winter morning.
To the foreground of the painting are some small empty rowing boats anchored just off the shore, behind these anchored boats are some larger passenger vessels gliding over the milky water. To the background, across the river we see the hazy Hampshire suburb beginning to wake up for the new day.
Judging by the ships, we would date this piece to around 1890.
The painting is signed to the bottom left corner "M. Snape".
It has been recently re-framed to complement the tones of the artwork with a double lined mount.
