~ Heavy Glass & Silver Inkwell London c1900 ~
A large heavy glass inkwell with sterling silver collar and lid dating to the turn of the 19th/20th century.
The inkwell is of heavy solid clear glass in square form with bevelled edges and corners.
The inkwell has a sterling silver domed hinged lid with gilt interior, engraved to the top with the initial ‘B.H.D’.
The piece has a glass insert which may or may not be original to the piece; it doesn’t sit flush in the hole.
The silver is hallmarked in two placed but the hallmarks are very worn. We can just about make out the London assay mark but it is clearly marked with the makers mark of ‘JG&S’ for John Grinsell & Sons. This company were active in the 1890’s and early 1900’s so we can assume this piece dates to that time.
~ Dimensions ~
The inkwell measures 10cm x 10cm (4 inches by 4 inches) with a height of 9.5cm (3 ¾ inches).
It weighs 1.87Kg.
~ Condition ~
The glass has a couple of flea bite chips to the edges but none are significant or particularly noticeable. The glass has a few light scratches to the underside.
The silver is in good condition with no damage but just some surface wear. But aside from the wear to the hallmarks the rest still looks good.
