This is an antique rose medallion rectangular open serving dish, also sometimes referred to as a vegetable dish. The main shape is rectangular but the long sides are slightly bowed in and the corners are scalloped to lend a more graceful line. The decoration is very bright and the enameling is very heavy, though well painted.
The piece was Chinese export for the American market and dates from the 3rd quarter of the Nineteenth Century. It was part of a large dinner service and was never meant to have a lid. It was used for vegetables like potatoes or rice.
Condition is very good with no significant problems.
Measurements are: length, 9 1/2 inches; width, 7 1/2 inches; height, 1 1/2 inches.
This is an unusual example that can be shown either on a stand or flat on a table. The excellent color and painting make it both collectible and attractive either for the connoisseur or the decorator. Please call or email if you have questions.
