This is an original pen and ink drawing with pastel and charcoal highlights. The subject is "Bird Island", Monhegan Island, Maine. The artist was Elizabeth N. Erlanger (1901-1975). It is signed "Erlanger" in the lower left and titled on the original mounting page. Provenance is: Estate of the artist. It was executed in 1955 when Erlanger spent a summer on Monhegan Island, an important artist colony in Maine. She is a recognized Monhegan artist and she preserved her Monhegan works in a labeled portfolio dated 1955.
Erlanger was a highly regarded abstract artist throughout her life. She studied at the Art Students League and with Hans Hoffman. She was a member of many important organizations including the National Association of Women Artists, the American Society of Contemporary Artists (President 1963-1965), etc. Her work is in the Brandeis Museum, the Peabody, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc. The National Association of Women Artists awards a prize in her honor.
Measurements are: drawing, 6 1/2 inches x 4 1/2 inches; frame outer dimensions, 18 5/8 inches x 15 1/4 inches.
Condition is excellent. It has professional conservation framing.
