This is a lovely carved rosewood and brass mahjong game box which was inherited from a Penn. family. The front and sides are carved rosewood with people and trees, the top is decorated with pierced brass. I do not play the game of mahjong, too busy finding wonderful antiques, so I am going on research for some of the details. There is a good ratio of horn to bamboo on the beautiful decorative tiles, about 60-40 to my eye. There are 36 decorative tiles in each box and another 3 in the bottom shelf which makes 147, 144 for playing and 3 extras. Included is a sweet tiny box that slides open for the die and a round box with a Chinese symbol on the top.
As to condition, there is a crack across the lovely carved rosewood front and one of the brass corners is missing a sections. The curved handles are in excellent condition and sturdy to carry the heavy box. The drawers slide easily.
