Gorgeous antique Victorian gold-filled, black enamel bar pin brooch, referred to as Taille d'epargne. The brooch is unsigned and in very good condition. The clasp works well. The clasp was replaced during the early 1900s based on the clasp style. The brooch measures approximately 2 1/8 inches by 1/2 inch. It looks beautiful worn as a collar pin or brooch. There is a photo of this brooch with others for size and color comparison. All of the brooches are sold separately.

Taille d'Épargne , sometimes called black enamel tracery, translates from the French literally as “saving cut.” It is a variation of champlevé whereby engraved lines forming a design are incised into the metal and are filled with opaque enamel – usually black – like basse taille enameling but without subtle depth variations. This technique was often used to decorate bracelets, watch cases, chatelaines and mourning jewelry. In the mid-1850s it was mass-produced by Birmingham (UK) firms. The Birmingham style was imitated in the United States c.1860. By the 1870s fashion turned to translucent enamel over engine-turned patterns ( guilloche enamel.)

Your beautiful brooch will be well-wrapped and shipped with insurance and tracking.

Thank you.
