Here is a stunning necklace and earring set by Dinah Gasper. She has created this necklace of crow fetishes made of jet. The delicately carved crows have turquoise eyes! The fetishes are strung of a heishee necklace of the same material and color as the crows. It is 36" long with the largest fetish measuring 1 ¾" by 1 ⅜". The other crows are slightly graduated and a bit smaller. The earring are 1 ⅛" by ½".
In the Native American culture animals have long been carved of natural materials and are a powerful reminder of human's connection with nature. These animal fetishes are especially valued due to the characteristics they possess in life, such as strength, bravery, cleverness or long life, etc. The crow is considered a highly intelligent bird and is revered as such.
Dinah Gasper is one of the premier Zuni fetish carvers, working with exquisite material and executing her designs with skill and delicacy. Her family is considered the oldest of the Zuni families to carve fetishes. Dinah and her husband Pete achieved fame for their outstanding work. Although Pete has passed, Dinah continues their tradition of high quality work.
