"One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy," as Ernestine was fond of saying between snorts on the old "Laugh-In" TV show. If you remember Lily Tomlin as Ernestine, then you might remember party lines and a time when employee dedication was appreciated. Ma Bell ( the Bell Telephone Company) awarded one of its employees with sterling silver charms for each year of exemplary attendance. This employee received 24 consecutive years of charms beginning in 1951 and ending in 1974.
Both the bracelet and the charms are marked sterling. The bracelet measures 7 1/4" in length. Each charm measures 1/2" by 1/2" and is marked "Attendance Award" and has the last two digits of the year, e. g. "51". The combined weight of the bracelet and charms is 47.1 grams.
Today, an original bracelet like this one may be harder to find than a telephone booth. Follow the advice of one of the Bell Telephone Company's later slogans--"Reach Out and Touch Someone"--with this bracelet. Not only does it represent a bit of history, it is a very attractive piece of jewelry on its own.
