Original Oil on Canvas by James Vincent Capua titled Strong Breeze. Back of the painting reads as follows:
James Vincent Capua is a historian and marine artist. He earned his doctorate in history at the University of Chicago and has published work on the legal and constitutional history of England. Born in 1949 he grew up on the Hudson River and spent many childhood summers on Long Island Sound. This background along with an early discovery of the seafaring novels of C.S Forester, formed the basis for a continuing fascination for ships and the sea. Though he has had some art and art history training, Capua is essentially a self-taught artist. "My real training " he says "has been the the hands of Turner, Brooking, Pocrock, Monami, and other of the 18th and 19th British Marine Painters." While pursuing his doctoral research in England he spent many afternoons studying the works of these painters in the National Maritime Museum, The Tate and the National Gallery. His study if the paintings themselves has been augmented by extensive reading in the works of 19th and 20th century art historians and critics who have analyzed the techniques of the Italian, Dutch and English Masters. Out of this study Capua's own technique has evolved.
There are 3 very small chips in the paint which I have carefully photographed and can be repaired, so look closely. It is a super painting, has a light that needs a small bulb which I hope to be able to replace. It is signed J V Capua in red in the lower right corner. I cannot find a date but he usually adds it so it is most likely under the frame.
The canvas measures 14" X 18". The frame is maple and measures 23 1/4" X 19 1/4"
