Vintage 1980s Mod Mexican Flip Ring in Turquoise, Coral and Sterling - Signed HOB

A statement ring in every way! The turquoise and coral are bezel set and spin, to wear either one way or the other. The wide front and smooth setting make it a remarkably comfortable ring for it's size. The ring face measures 1 1/4" (32mm) from top to bottom with the with the turquoise/coral focal measures 5/8" (15mm) round with depth of 8mm. The ring sides taper down from 3/4" to 1/2" and then to the back band at 1/4".

This ring is a little complicated research wise. It is marked HOB, 925 and MEXICO. According to Bille Hougart's Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade Hallmarks, this mark has been seen with the addition of TM-100 (page 187 of the Kindle eBook version - in other books look to his listings under 3 or 4 initial marks). The TM-100 mark is not on this ring but it has been sized, so it may have been lost in sizing. The TM-100 mark would suggest a ring made after the alpha numeric system was put into place in the late 1970's/ early 1980's. In this case T would indicate Taxco, M would be the first or last initial of the silversmith's name (which doesn't jive with HOB) and 100 would mean that they were the 100th silversmith with that name combination to register at the assay office. The use of the M does contrast to the HOB, however there are many reasons for this to happen. One silversmith working under another larger silversmith or the application of an alpha numeric mark to an already existing older mark...in either case HOB is documented but there does seem to be some discrepancy out there as to where they were located - Taxco or Mexico City. If you go with Bille's book, which I am, it would be Taxco.

Size 9.5 (on a smaller hand/finger, this can be a good size for a middle finger ring).

Since this is primarily openwork ring, the weight is light at 7 grams.
