Vintage 1970's 1980's Alaskan Yupik Mask and Arrow Tie Clip from Pioneer Jewelry Company.
The Yupik masks were created in design under the Shamans' direction and were the most popular of ritual masks. The masks varied but they were basically all some variation of this design and were made to bring good fortune during a hunt, hence the arrow.
Pioneer Jewelry was founded in Juneau in 1975. A husband and wife team that sold tourist jewelry along the waterfront. They grew over the years but still have their waterfront shop today...I love that kind of vintage business story!
There's a lot of great detail in this eye catching clip, including small lines at the top of the mask to represent tendrils of hair and I'm guessing that most of Pioneer's pieces were and are that way. That's the beauty of a small business...details.
This would make a great Father's Day gift for the frontiersman type or just a guy who loves scary masks:)
The clip is very good condition, with only some spotted wear to the back of the mask. This is much more visible in the photos, under magnification, than it is to the naked eye.
Measures 2 5/8" long by 7/8" wide (mask from head to chin) or 66mm by 23mm
