Vintage 1950's 1960's Abstract Design Burgundy and Black George of Brooklyn Men's Skinny Tie.
A beautiful tie from my late father in law's collection. He was a sharp guy in every way. A snappy dresser with a quick wit and a subdued, patient demeanor. Initially, I couldn't think of selling these ties. I thought about making them into some kind of keepsake for family members but I think he would have been happier knowing that they went to new homes with a breath of new life. He only purchased his clothing from the finest, family owned stores in Brooklyn, primarily the Sheepshead Bay area. I'm happy to be offering them today and more will follow in the next few months.
This tie is 40% weighted silk which gives it weight and an iridescence or pearly sheen. Salts, mostly iron in darker colored silk, were added to increase weight and create the iridescent effect. The down side was that it made the silk not as durable. That being said, you can see that this tie has endured beautifully for the past 60 years.
I have photographed this tie numerous times, trying to get it's correct shade of burgundy to come through but no matter the lighting, the iridescence has it turning up more pink and black than burgundy and black. If you look at this last photo with the label, you will see the true burgundy color of the tie. If the light hits it right, you may have a pinker tie. A nice little splash of white and gray, highlight the tie about 1/4 of the way down.
The tie's width is 2 3/8" at the base, 2" around the middle and 1 5/8" at the top.
The labels read "Imported All Silk Weighted Up To 40%" and "George Brooklyn" with a GE logo. I've searched high and low for old George, but to no avail...if something pops up, I will fill you in on his history.
Thank you so much for stopping by and as always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
