Vintage 1970's Seymour Mann Floral Chrysanthemum Pattern Pedestal Cake Stand and Plates - 8 Piece - Made in Japan
This applied design is gorgeous in shades of orange, yellow and green. Seymour Mann was founded in 1946 (NYC) by Seymour Mann and Herman Lipper. A giftware import company that, despite a few organizational changes, remained family owned until 2006. His original import company was Lipper Mann. Eventually they would bring on another partner and that company would be sold to two other companies but Seymour and his artist wife Eda, retained their designs via her artwork that decorated most of their service pieces. Seymour passed away in 2004 at the age of 92. His wife Eda, whose artistic talent landed her pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, passed away in 2012 at the age of 100. Not only were they a remarkably interesting couple, who personified the American entrepreneurial spirit, their daughter is author Erica Jong who made her own remarkable mark in history during the 1970's.
I love companies like this...rich in history and spirit. It may be just giftware, but it's very cool giftware!
Back to the stand and plates...
The cake plate measures 10 1/4" in diameter and 5" tall. The plates measure 8" in diameter. The set includes 1 Cake Stand and 7 Plates. I do have an eighth plate but it does have a 1/2" chip to the top edge. I am happy to include it at not extra charge, please note the inclusion in the comment area of your purchase order or feel free to contact me. All of the other pieces are in very good to excellent vintage condition. You will notice that the applied design has some wear at the point where the flowers meet the edge and an area on the underside of the cake plate has glue where the base was either reattached or the plate was stored in a spot that was a little too warm and the glue found it's way out. It is, however, very sturdy and stable.
The design is signed Eda on the plates and stand with the undersides marked with the Chrysanthemum / Seymour Mann mark. A silver foil label reads Made in Japan.
Thank you so much for stopping by and as always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
