Vintage Portuguese Clay Artist Rosa Ramalho Anthropomorphic Rooster with Guitar Sculpture.
Born in Barcelos, Portugal in 1888, Rosa Ramalho was interested in clay almost from the beginning, but life had other plans for her. She raised a family and delayed her artistic endeavors for almost 60 years, not becoming a recognized artist until her mid 70's. Information on Rosa is sparse and mostly from Portuguese sources, but her pieces speak for themselves. I've had this Rooster for quite some time now and I can tell you that he brings a smile to everyone that catches a glimpse of him. He inspires creativity and makes you want to learn more about the woman who created him. Rosa did a series of these named pieces, but I've been unable to find another exactly like him, so his true name is still mystery.
Rosa's granddaughter Julia, carries on her work today with similar sculptures.
He stands 8" tall and measures 3" wide (shoulder to shoulder).
His beak was cracked and repaired (prior to it being in my possession). It aligns perfectly and is virtually unnoticeable, other than the presence of glue overflow. A small of glue, as seen in the 7th photo below. He also has a 2mm chip just above his left knee (as you look at the photos). In my opinion, his charm far outweighs his flaws.
Marked with Rosa's RR on the top of the base.
