Antique Nippon Royal Satsuma Chocolate Pot Set - 10 Piece
Truly a piece of history. This early 1900's tea/chocolate pot set was made by Royal Satsuma and presumably the House of Satsuma, as the backstamp crest is the faded Gosu Blue Circle with a Cross used by the House of Satsuma.
Highly collectible with very few on the market today.
This set includes:
1 Teapot and Lid
(I do have one extra saucer that I will include with the set)
The gold detail is just gorgeous and as shiny as it was 100 years ago...a plethora of pastels fill out the design on all pieces. The applied slipwork designs are striking. There is some wear to the rims of the cups...a slight roughness where some of the glaze has eroded over time and some fading to the gold trim on the handle. The lid to the teapot has been broken and glued (I'm guessing quite some time ago and it was very well done). While the crack itself is not noticeable from the outside, there is a chip (more of a small hole at 4mm)that is noticeable under close inspection and a chip to the inside bottom of the lid, which is hidden when the lid is on the pot. The amount of detail in the design detracts from these flaws. Other than these flaws to the lid...there are no other chips or cracks of any kind. All flaws are visible in the last pics at left...if you would like additional pictures, please let me know.
Teapot holds 32 ounces and measures 8.5" tall and 7.5" handle to spout.
Marked "Nippon" "Royal Satsuma" and the cross crest from House of Satsuma.
For me personally, some pieces are so beautiful and in this case, rare...that the flaws (when not overtly visible) pale by comparison. I will therefore, on occasion, list an item despite it's flaws. However, any and all flaws are listed in the description with accompanying pictures.
Price reflects the aforementioned flaws to the piece.
