Vintage Indonesian Horse Design, Brass Betel Nut Cutter, Slicer or Cigar Cutter. The Areca nut, also known as the Betel nut hails from the Areca Palm Tree and is actually a seed and not a nut. It's consistency can range from soft to very hard, hence the need for two handled slicers. It is then wrapped in a Betel leaf ( the Betel plant is a vine with large leaves ). The Betel leaf and Areca nut have been used together since Ancient times, for their mind altering properties. That led to their ceremonial use, which in turn led to the creatively and ornately designed cutters. Interesting....
That being said, the dates on cutters such as this, range from the early 1800's to the 1940's.
One small nick in the blade shows it to be most likely steel and could be sharpened for use in cigar cutting.
Measurements are 7.25" (head to feet) by 3.25" (head to hoof).
