Vintage Siam Sterling Silver Niello Etched Fan Brooch.
The Siam / Thailand history is an interesting one. Siam was the official name of the country until the 1939 when it was renamed Thailand. Wars and military coups had the country reverting back to Siam from 1946 to 1948 at which point, it went back to Thailand. If you're unfamiliar with this country's unique history, I encourage further reading. It's truly very interesting!
That said, these name changes mean that your piece marked Siam Silver or Made in Siam, comes from either pre 1939 or the short period between 1945/46 and 1948/1949. There are quite a few reproductions out there and I'm happy to assist you in further information on dating your Siam Silver.
The scrolled etching on this pin, combined with the matte finish of the Niello work, makes it quite beautiful. Niello is not enamel but a mixing of metals added to a recessed area of the silver and then baked and buffed. Niello pieces will not chip, the way that an enamel piece does and tend to keep their smooth appearance for a much longer period of time.
It's important to remember that these pieces were made during a relatively short time period and that they are a beautiful representation of not only a jewelry technique, but of history.
The pin measures 2 1/4" by 1 5/8" or 57mm by 42mm.
Excellent condition with secure clasp.
Marked "Sterling" and "Made in Siam"
