Vintage 1995 MMA Metropolitan Ancanthus Leaf Brooch.
Personally, I am a big fan of museum jewelry...the little works of art are beautiful reminders of interesting exhibits. The Metropolitan Museum of Art had both a Hellenistic Jewelry exhibit and a Greco / Roman Architecture exhibit in 1995. The ancanthus flower and particularly their leaves, were a major part of architecture in the 2nd Century AD. Think of the many columns, from that period, where the leaf is the is the focal design at the top of the column. That being said, the making of the brooch in 1995 could have been inspired by either exhibit.
The brooch measures 2 1/8" by 1 3/4" (53mm by 45mm) and has antiqued goldtone finish.
Excellent condition with clasp in perfect working order.
Marked "MMA" "1995" (these marks are worn and very faint but you will be able to make them out under a jewelry loop).
Thanks so much for stopping by and as always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
