This may have been used on a ceremonial costume for a fraternal or secret society or simply attached to waistcoat buttons and used as a ribbon fob. To both tops of this piece there appears to be button loops that attached to buttons on a cloak, waistcoat or perhaps a military uniform. There are mythological creatures found on the main piece and depictions are repeated on the button loops as well. Some form of a winged creature, at this time I can’t decipher exactly what these mythological creatures are.
Attached to the loops is a substantial belcher chain which is on a pulley found in the center. This allows the ends to be hooked at different heights if so desired or needed. Below the circular pulley you will see a clenched fist with a very decorative cuff. This hand is holding the lower portion of this most unusual piece. Coming from both sides of this fist appear to be outstretched fern leaves. Toward the center of the bottom piece is a usable belt buckle.
This buckle may have had a ribbon with a watch fob attachment or may have been used to house the ribbon/badge that indicated that person’s level or degree in this society. These ribbons quite possibly were switched out as the wearer rose in the organization. To the back and at the bottom there appears to be a diamond shape that has the maker’s mark and it reads ‘FLS’ in a diamond shape, and on the other side ‘10’ found in a recessed square.
To the back of the buckle tines there is as well two recessed stamps one appears to be a head in profile while the other is way too small for me to decipher. Length of this adornment if button loops are at the same height is 6 ¾ inches in length by 2 inches in width and weighs 35.94 grams.
I have acid tested this piece for silver content and it is reading at 900 coin silver. This piece may have an extremely thick silver application and could possibly be silver plate. Without the ability to cut into the metal I can’t be 100% sure. The back markings are of a European nature and may either be from France or possibly Eastern European.
A most interesting piece of jewelry that may be worn as a necklace using a silk colored ribbon of your choice or a closure for a cape, jacket or coat. A most impressive and personal statement to say the least.
