1866 Indiana Southern RW Bond Certificate, signed by Samuel Tilden as Trustee on reverse side. Very attractive railroad scripophily bond with vignettes of a steam train and bridge in distance and allegorical figures either side. Samuel Tilden (1814-1886) was the 25th Governor of New York, and lost the 1876 Presidential election to Rutherford Hays despite winning the popular vote. He received about 250,000 more votes than the Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes, and 184 uncontested electoral votes against 163 for Hayes, with returns from Oregon, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida (carrying 22 electoral votes altogether) missing and not counted. An electoral commission was created by Congress to examine and report upon the contested returns in these states; the commission reported all the states in favor of Hayes, electing him president by one electoral vote. Tilden accepted the result to avoid civil war, but always maintained that he was wrongfully deprived of the election. Democrats accepted this result in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, ending the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. Bond is in VF+ condition; scan of Tilden is not shown (Ruby Lane's requirement for high pixel scans makes this impractical; email me and I can send a scan of signature).
Purchasing Notes: Payment by check or PayPal. Insurance is bundled with shipping. I use a third party shipping insurer (not USPS, which does not insure 1st class large envelops, and is seriously overpriced due to pervasive fraudulent claims). I offer two domestic shipping choices: $3.50 for first class, and $7.50 for Priority. Priority is recommended for orders over $100. International shipping is $6.00 for a large 1st class envelope. Other international options are usually too expensive. Shipping charge does not increase if you order more than one item. Shipping in the US is very reliable. I lose less than one item for every 1000 I ship, and I have never made a claim for a damaged shipment in over 20 years (scripophily shipments are not exactly breakable). Do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
