An elaborately detailed gimmel, fede ring designed in the Victorian manner. Two finely contoured hands are hinged and articulated. They open and close. When opened they reveal a heart with a diamond at its center.
The word Fede means loyalty, faith, and trust in Italian. The sentimental ring motif was given as a promise or betrothal. This one, an intricate amusement and love token. The movable hands clasp to protect the hidden heart. These love tokens originated in ancient Rome and have been given through the centuries and seen in many cultures. The Georgian era introduced the gimmel ring, which has a similar meaning, but added interlocking bands. This ring exhibits both gimmel and fede motifs. The ring is in tested 14k gold and set with a diamond. The one-of-a-kind ring was made mid-century and is a beautifully constructed work of art. Size 5 1/2.
