Antique Art Nouveau ALLSOPP BROS 14K Gold Carved Amethyst Intaglio God Mercury Ring

Wonderful Circa 1900 natural carved amethyst intaglio ring depicting the god Mercury or Hermes of mythology. He is considered the herald of the gods and protector of humans and travelers. Recognized by his winged helmet, he also is associated with medicine and healing. The carving is beautifully rendered and the amethyst is radiant. The shoulders of the ring have a neoclassical arch design. The amethyst is set in a raised mount with beautiful open-worked florets. Signed, hallmarked with a partial ALLSOPP Brothers logo. The firm was established in 1885 in Newark, NJ when it was a mecca for jewelry design innovation. Tests 14K, in a size 6 1/2. Amethyst approximately two carats, face approx 13mm high.
