Glittering gold bookends with a Madame Butterfly theme and done in the Art Deco style from the famous Pompeian Bronze Works. The detailing is lovely and they are cast with a deep relief.
A matched pair of very heavy bronze bookends that have been enameled with white to depict the sky. The design is of a lonely Asian beauty playing a flute while a tall mast ship sails away. The crescent moon is high in the sky as she plays her flute. The bronze has been finished with an almost gold appearance. There is green felt on the bases of each.
There is the mark Moonlight Sonata on the back of each.
5 7/8” (14.9 cm) tall x 3 7/8” (9.8 cm) wide x 2” (5.1 cm) deep. Weighs 4 lb 5.9 oz (1985 g)
The felts on both are worn. One felt has a corner turned up and the other has a worn spot. There are wear scratches on the backs. The fronts are in very good shape with hardly any wear. There is a scratch on one bookend to the left of her robe, a small scratch in the enamel by her head on the other, and some spotting on the robe of one of the figures. The bookends are still glittering like gold after all of these years.
A shiny, very heavy pair of bookends that are rare and rich looking. They will add that Deco touch to a room.
