A well cast heavy brass Japanese Deco pair of cranes with good detail.
Both birds have nicely molded feathering, feet and facial features. They have been finished with black patina on the legs, feet, tail and neck; and red enameling of the crowns on their heads. The figures have a heavy weight to them. They stand up on their own. One is on a black painted wood base.
The mold lines have been polished off and so are not visible. There is a part of an old label on the underside of one crane that reads “MADE IN”.
Tall crane - 11 ¼” (28.6 cm) tall x 5 ½” (14 cm) long x 4 ¾” (12.1 cm) wide
Shorter crane – 6 ½” (16.5 cm) tall x 8” (20.3 cm) long x 3” (7.6 cm) wide
Total weight 2 lbs 7.1 oz (1105 g)
There is modest wear to the black finish on the legs, neck and tail of the taller figure. The neck of the shorter crane shows a bit more wear. There is also modest spotting on the brass and small losses to the red patches on the crown of both figures. The taller crane’s stand has some paint loss. It’s not clear whether the smaller crane was ever mounted on a stand because there’s no residue from adhesive on the bottom of the feet. There is a small felt pad on the bottom of the foot of the smaller crane, most likely to keep the sharp toe from scratching furniture. It seems to help balance the figure too.
A deco pair of Japanese cranes that have a nice look of age and artistry.
