Detailed, well executed carving in reddish soapstone of the Chinese God of Longevity Shou Lao and the peach of immortality.
A reddish soapstone has been intricately carved with deep clothing folds, facial features and peach. The carving is old with no soapy feeling to the stone. He has a matching dark gray Lake Tai stone stand carved out of a separate soapstone piece.
There is the word CHINA etched into the back of the robe near the base.
Carving only: 5 ¾” (14.6 cm) tall x 2” (5.1 cm) wide x 1 1/8” (2.9 cm) deep. With stand: 7 7/8” (20.0 cm) tall x 2 ¼” (5.7 cm) wide x 2” (5.1 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 1.6 oz (500 g)
The tips of both sides of the sleeves are missing. The figure and his stand are separate but could be glued back together. There are no other cracks, breaks, or chips.
An antique carving from an expert folk art sculptor that has survived to today. The carving is amazing.
