A lovely antique silverplate jewelry casket by the premier Victorian silver plate company of James Tufts. It is very well preserved.
A heavy metal casket was formed into a spherical vessel to hold jewelry. It has rich ornamentation everywhere except the lid top. The interior has a wine-colored velvet lining that is original to the piece. The hinge is a pin hinge.
In the center of the base is the Tufts mark. It reads JAMES W. TUFTS QUADRUPLEPLATE BOSTON WARRANTED with a T within a four-pointed star. The production number 3214 and “20” is also stamped into the base.
MEASUREMENTS
5 ¾” (14.6 cm) wide x 4 ¼” (10.8 cm) diameter x 6” (15.2 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 0.7 oz (470 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks, chips, cracks, repairs, or dents. There is slight wear to the lid along the front, but the piece shined up nicely and does not need re-plating. The velvet in the main body shows wear and is faded from age and use. The lid velvet is still colorful and shows little wear.
An amazing over-the-=top jewelry casket that is a great addition to a Victorian Aesthetic Movement collection. It will shine wherever it’s placed.
