An over the top explosion of flowers and metal curls marks this incredible cake basket from the 19th century.
A heavy metal basket shape has floral repousse and then was silver plated. The handle is quite eye catching with wrapped metal culminating in a bead finial. The legs are no less florid and bring the eye up to the band of flowers on the outer body. Peering into the bowl of the basket your eyes take in the central medallion of swirling flowers.
The base has a stamped mark that reads DERBY SILVER CO. QUADRUPLEPLATE, with the production mark “1049”
7 ¾” (19.7 cm) diameter x 10” (25.4 cm) tall with handle extended. 4 3/8” (11.1 cm) tall with handle down. Weighs 1 lb 14.1 oz (885 g)
There are no dents, cracks or breaks. There are some scratches, particularly around the lower portions along the side. The basket has significant silver loss, but still has some shine. The handle will stand up and the basket rests flat on a surface with no rocking.
Can you imagine serving tea cakes in this incredible cake basket. A real show stopper.
