A heavy, shiny, very elaborate handblown cased glass and silver plate brides basket by one of the best Victorian makers of the day. It’s definitely a stand out.

The heavy metal base has been silver plated. It still has much silver and has polished up nicely. The glass is hand blown into a mold and has two layers clear and white turning to pink edges. The bowl has a polished pontil mark. The metal holder is very elaborate with molded handles and a finial that resemble lace. These are attached to a large circular dish with an ornate apron of stylized floral motifs. The legs are also very elaborate.

There is a makers mark on the base with the words MERIDEN B. COMPANY encircling an anchor. There is a second circle with MERIDEN BRITANNIA MERIDEN CT QUADRUPLEPLATE and the production number 1545.

MEASUREMENTS

10” (25.4 cm) wide x 8 ¾” (22.2 cm) diameter x 13 ½” (34.3 cm) tall. Weighs 4 lb 3.3 oz (1905 g)

CONDITION

There are no breaks, dents, or cracks, and the frame still has much silver. There are wear scratches to the central metal well. There is a solder mark underneath next to one of the legs and the metal basket rocks slightly on its legs. There are a few wear scratches to the glass. The glass dish may be a marriage; it fits but doesn’t cover the edge of the metal holder entirely.

A colorful. Shiny ornate over the top brides basket to add richness and age to the décor.
