An over-the-top jewelry box with movable parts and almost every inch embellished that is still shiny with much silver.
A heavy cast silver plated box with a florid framework. The rectangular box has layered flower band decoration, a flower apron on the front, and a florid handle on the top. This handle has a leaf at the end that opens the box when pressed. Inside the box is new black felt and a fine chain remnant that was attached on the inside of the lid so it swings open. The framework is very busy with climbing flower and leaf vines. The box rests on four ball feet.
There is a circular mark on the box base that reads, “MERIDEN B. COMPANY” in a circular pattern around a pair of scales. “PAT.OCT. 22 1878” and the number “51” are also stamped on the base.
7 ¾” (19.7 cm) tall x 5 ¾” (14.6 cm) wide x 5” (12.7 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 13.1 oz (830 g)
There are no breaks, or cracks. Both of the front corners are a little bent and there is a small nick on the front edge. Part of the chain inside the box is missing. It has shined up well but there are some silver losses.
An incredible over the top Victorian jewelry casket that will be useful to store jewelry or add to a Victorian décor.
