Over the top but elegant butter dish in three parts by Reed and Barton with Japanese designs. The EAPG glass insert that holds the butter has a fun cow design.

A heavy base metal butter dish with top and base that has been silver plated. It still has most of its silver and has shined up nicely. The dish has a molded glass insert for holding the butter above ice below. The insert’s cavetto is frosted with a clear pattern of daisies. The central well is frosted with a clear free standing cow with horns. The insert’s edges are ridged, which holds the metal lid in place
The lid has a Japanese design of butterflies, a bird, palm fronds, and brocade patterned panels. On the edge below the dome top is a repeating repousse band of fans, kingfisher, spider web and other very Japanese designs. The lid is topped off with a round knob finial with a daisy decoration. The handled body has a knife holder on the front with a repousse band below of Japanese scenes. They are quite deep and detailed.

A mark on the base center read, “MFGD & PLATED BY REED & BARTON” with the number 1012. It is difficult to read because some of the lettering is not well defined

MEASUREMENTS

7 3/4” (19.7 cm) wide x 5 ¾” (14.6 cm) diameter x 7” (17.8 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lb 3.6 oz (1010 g)

CONDITION

The lid and base have no splits, breaks, or dents. It still has much silver and has shined up nicely. The glass insert has a large chip on one edge. Although the chip is visible even when the lid is on, it isn’t very noticeable because the lid’s pattern is so busy.

This is high end Aesthetic Movement and looks rich and elegant. For a collector, this is a great piece. I love the detailed, minute Japanese sensibility.
