A colorful cranberry and painted enameled Victorian glass is partnered with an elaborate silver plate framework with a set of small tongs.

An elaborate heavy metal base is silver plated and is a framework for a glass insert. The glass insert is molded with a thumb nail pattern and then painted with enamel colors in a design of flowers and foliage. The top edge of the glass jar is a cranberry color the bottom is a clear glass. The glass is that antique Victorian flinty glass. The metal frame work has a rim band of swirls, with a plain base with no decoration. There are two florid handles on equidistant sides. Opposite of the handles are two florid triangular supports one of which has a hook for the elaborate but small sugar tongs.

There is a mark on the base. It reads; in a circle the words QUADRUPLE PLATE WARRANTED with the word AURORA in the center and the mark SPMFB CO . Below this mark is the number 1148 . Someone has etched the numbers 2.65.691 on the base edge.

MEASUREMENTS

8” (20.3 cm) wide x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) diameter x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 5.6 oz (610 g)

CONDITION

There are no dents in the metal. There is a soldered area on the top of one of the triangular supports. This may have been to let the glass insert in. One of the curved handles is not fully attached to the base. The framework still has much silver and has polished up nicely. The glass insert has no cracks, or breaks. There are tiny rim frits at the mouth but none that could be called a chip. The enameling is in good shape with no losses. The piece looks intact and in good shape. It may have had a lid but it was found without.

A beautiful, large, antique, Victorian sugar bowl to sit in a window and flash color into the room. Imagine putting this on the table with sugar cubes for high tea or just high sweet tea.
