Octagonal shaped covered sugar bowl with an Italianate black transfer that is highly decorative. But still very useful.
A heavy, low fired, octagonal molded ceramic is decorated with a black transfer design of an Italian villa by a lake in the mountains. The transfer incorporates darker and lighter elements for a feeling of distance. The sugar bowl has a matching octagonal lid with an octagonal finial. The octagonal body has two jutting bar handles and a shallow foot. The lid fits in a lowered mouth with a flange.
There is an impressed “W” on the base.
7” (17.8 cm) tall x 6” (15.2 cm) wide x 5 ½” (14.0 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 14.0 oz (850 g)
There is a small chip on the inner mouth flange and another small one on the inner mouth rim of the lid. There are areas of discoloration under the finial, spotting on the white of the body, the lid underside, the mouth and lid edges, and in the interior. The transfer was well done with few errors. The pattern looks bright and fresh.
A large sculptural sugar bowl to add to a pattern or to decorate with a Victorian sensibility.
