A large hand-painted antique Chinese porcelain ginger jar with butterflies, flying birds, magnolia flowers, peony flowers and lake Tai stones. There is a striped border at the foot and a diamond and floral band at the mouth. There is a brass metal ring at the mouth to hold the lid firmly that is not original to the jar. The lid matches the color palette of the jar and appears to be original. It has a peony flower with a line border at the rim.
The rounded foot ring is unglazed. The glazed base has a double cobalt ring.
11 ½” (29.2 cm) tall x 9” (22.9 cm) diameter. Weighs 5 lb 12.9 oz (2630 g)
The jar was lamped in the twenties and has drilled holes in the center of the lid and base. There is a either a hairline or small concussion mark near the hole on the base. It had the metal ring added on the mouth of the jar. It looks good and holds the lid firmly in place. There is wear to the jar from use, but the glazes are fresh and bright. There are glaze chips on the lid and jar. There are a couple of chips on the foot, most likely from manufacture. There are also small kiln flaws, such as blackspots.
A large decorative ginger jar to add to a collection or decorate the home with. It is large and will make quite a statement.
