A nearly matched set of eight covered, handled soup bowls with designs of roses surrounded by flowers, fruit and butterflies.

The design on one of the bowls (the one without a “CHINA” mark on the bottom (see below)) has a slightly smaller design with a blue ribbon around the peonies. One of the lids matches that design. Three of the remaining lids have double peonies (like the bowls do) and four have single peonies in each arrangement. Otherwise the designs of all eight bowls and lids are very, very similar. The over glaze enamel paintings are fine and exact and all done by hand. The handles, finials and bands have gilding. The glazes are bright and fresh.

The very thinly potted porcelain covered bowls have delicate attached handles and lid finials. The porcelain is so thin that it is translucent. The interior edges of the lids are not glazed. There is the mark CHINA in iron red within a lozenge on the base of all bowls except one.

Provenance: From the Ellis Family collection, a well-known Pacific Northwest family. The Ellis' were pioneer settlers to the San Juan Islands in the late 19th century. The collection was purchased in the late 19th and early 20th Century.

**Please note that we have or will be listing several other matching and coordinating large bowls (including a mate for THIS bowl), tureens, platters, serving and other dishes soon. Please inquire if you are interested in purchasing one or more pieces together**

MEASUREMENTS

3 7/8” (9.8 cm) diameter x 3” (7.6 cm) tall. Total weight 2 lbs 0 oz (900 g)

CONDITION

There are no breaks, chips, or cracks to any of the bowls. There is slight wear to the gilding and glaze on the mouth rims, otherwise there is little wear. The glazes look fresh and bright. There are kiln flaws like black spots and paint mistakes, especially on the inside of some of the lid (see photos). On several of the lids it looks like the white glaze wasn’t fully dry when they were moved and it’s marred along the bottom edges.

A large set to add to a collection or to display in the home décor.
